Chapter 11 - The Name on the Form

"Remove it."
The registrar shook her head. "We can correct the record, but we need security and legal to document the unauthorized access."
"Then document it while you remove it."
Briar was in recovery, pale and exhausted, our son tucked against her chest.
We named him Henry James Sterling.
Not because my father was suddenly a hero.
Because he had survived long enough for the truth to reach us.
Ortiz arrived with two officers and a warrant for hospital access logs.
"The code used belongs to Maris," she said. "But the terminal was in an administrative office two floors down. Camera shows Victor Dane entering that corridor."
"So Victor did it."
"Maybe."
"Elise said he's been running this for eleven years."
Ortiz nodded. "She lawyered up after that sentence."
My phone buzzed.
An unknown number.
I answered.
"Noah." My mother's voice.
Every muscle in my body locked.
"Where are you?"
"You should be asking where Victor is."
"You put your name on my son's record."
"I did no such thing."
"Your authorization code did."
A long silence.
Then she said, "Victor has had access to my office for twenty years."
I almost laughed.
"Now you're the victim?"
"No. I am guilty of many things. But not all of them."
Briar watched me carefully.
I put the call on speaker.
Maris continued.
"Eleven years ago, I helped Victor hide your father. I signed papers. I lied to you. I told myself Henry was sick and dangerous. Victor told me he would expose what your father had done to the company unless I cooperated."
"What did Dad do?"
"Nothing."
Her voice cracked for the first time.
"That was the lie."
Ortiz leaned closer to the phone.
"Mrs. Sterling, where are you?"
Maris ignored her.
"Noah, Victor is going to the old Sterling archive. If he gets there first, he will burn the only document your father never signed."
"What document?"
"The one that proves who actually stole the money eleven years ago."
The line went dead.
Briar looked at me.
"Do you believe her?"
May you like
I looked at our newborn son.
"I believe she's finally afraid of the same man she helped."
