Chapter 8 - What the Baby Changes

Do not let her take the baby.

Ortiz took the recorder from me.

"There's more."

My father's voice continued.

"Your grandfather built the Sterling trust with a clause Maris could never change. Control passes to my bloodline when the first grandchild is born. Until then, she remains acting trustee."

I stared at Ortiz.

Suddenly, every argument with my mother during Briar's pregnancy made sense.

Why she insisted on choosing the hospital.

Why she demanded copies of our prenatal records.

Why she had pushed us to sign a family medical power of attorney "in case something happened during delivery."

My father coughed on the recording.

"She needs your child legally tied to her before birth or declared unfit after it. If she controls the child's guardianship, she controls the trust."

My phone rang.

Briar.

I answered immediately.

"I'm here."

Her breathing came fast.

"Where are you?"

"Coming back."

"Noah, the contractions are three minutes apart."

"I'm on my way."

"Listen first. Colleen found something."

The phone shifted.

Colleen's voice came on.

"Your mother's attorney filed an emergency petition forty minutes ago."

"For what?"

"Temporary guardianship of your unborn child if Briar becomes incapacitated during delivery."

I stopped walking.

"That's impossible."

"Not if they claim both parents are medically compromised. The filing says you're emotionally unstable after discovering your father's 'delusional records.'"

Ortiz swore.

Briar came back on.

"They planned this before she hit me."

"I'm coming."

"Noah."

Her voice softened.

"Find your dad. If he's alive, he can destroy their claim."

A patrol officer ran from the porch.

"Detective! Harbor unit found a medical transport van at Lake Milton Marina."

Ortiz looked at me.

My phone filled with Briar's next contraction.

My wife was in labor in one direction.

My father was being taken toward the water in the other.

Then Briar whispered through clenched teeth:

"Go get him. Bring him home."
