Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN IN THE FRONT PEW

Julia found the funeral photograph in an old album.

Daniel’s mother, Evelyn Mercer, sitting in the front pew.

Julia stopped.

Evelyn.

“She was beside me.”

Ortiz read Diane’s letter again.

The second person said bloodlines matter more than mothers.

Julia knew immediately.

“That was Evelyn.”

Park dug into the trust history.

He found something worse.

Evelyn and Grant had created a private guardianship agreement two months before Thomas was born.

If Julia became “medically or emotionally unfit,” custody could be shifted to a Mercer-appointed guardian.

Julia had never signed it.

Her signature was forged.

Thomas listened from the hallway.

“So Grandma Evelyn took me?”

Julia turned.

“You shouldn’t be hearing this.”

“I already lived it.”

The words silenced the room.

Julia pulled out a chair.

Thomas sat.

Ortiz spoke gently.

“Do you remember an older woman?”

Thomas nodded slowly.

“Gray hair.”

“Pearl earrings?” Julia asked.

He looked surprised.

“Yes.”

Julia closed her eyes.

“What did she say?”

Thomas rubbed the hospital bracelet between his fingers.

“She said you were weak.”

Julia’s throat tightened.

“She said Mercer boys belonged to Mercers.”

Emily, standing behind Julia, whispered, “That’s horrible.”

Thomas looked at his little sister.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Ortiz asked one more question.

“Did Evelyn ever mention your father?”

Thomas hesitated.

“She said he betrayed the family.”

Julia felt the room tilt.

“How?”

Thomas swallowed.

“She said he found the ledger.”

Park looked up sharply.

“What ledger?”

Thomas shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Then Julia remembered Daniel’s last voicemail.

She had saved it because she liked hearing his voice.

She played it now.

At the end, beneath road noise, Daniel said something she had never understood.

“Jules, if I’m late, tell Grant I found the blue book.”

Park went still.

He looked at Ortiz.

“The Mercer blue ledger disappeared the week Daniel died.”

Julia stared at him.

“What was in it?”

May you like

Park answered quietly.

“Proof that the family fortune was built with money that never belonged to them.”
