Chapter 8 - THE BLUE LEDGER

The Mercer family had owned hospitals, nursing homes, and medical supply companies for decades.

“The blue ledger tracked the off-book accounts,” Park said.

“Daniel found it?”

“Apparently.”

“And Grant wanted it.”

“Everyone with exposure wanted it.”

Julia looked at Thomas.

“Why hide a baby over a ledger?”

Park turned the trust document around.

“Because your father-in-law did something interesting.”

The first surviving child of Daniel inherited not only the trust.

He inherited voting control over the holding company at age eighteen.

Thomas would someday have the legal power to open sealed corporate archives.

Grant had control only while Thomas was dead or absent.

Julia whispered, “So they erased him.”

Park nodded.

“And Daniel discovered both things at once.”

Thomas stared at the table.

“Was Dad trying to get me back?”

Julia took his hand.

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

She showed him Daniel’s folder.

Every photo.

Every invoice.

Every note.

Thomas cried silently.

“I thought nobody came.”

Julia’s voice broke.

“He came.”

She squeezed his hand.

“He just didn’t make it home.”

That evening, Mrs. Alvarez knocked on Julia’s back door.

She looked nervous.

“I saw a car.”

“What car?”

“Black sedan.”

Julia went cold.

It had driven past twice.

Then parked half a block away.

Ortiz sent patrol officers.

By the time they arrived, it was gone.

But Thomas found something on the front porch.

A white envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Emily walking to school.
