Chapter 14 - The Incident

I read the line again.
PUBLIC INCIDENT IF POSSIBLE.
Vanessa shook her head before I asked.
"He did not tell me to trip you."
"I believe you."
"Why?"
"Because you didn't know who I was."
Daniel reviewed the fountain footage frame by frame.
At 8:06 p.m., Peter Lang entered the terrace.
At 8:11, he spoke to Grant.
At 8:14, Grant looked directly at me.
At 8:17, Vanessa tripped me.
At 8:18, Grant sent a message.
Police recovered it from Peter's phone.
NOW.
Peter deleted the service-hall camera three minutes later.
While everyone watched me climb out of the fountain, Peter entered the donor office and removed the audit binders.
Vanessa sat very still.
"He used me."
"He used everybody."
At noon, the board meeting began.
I presented the transfers, the shell companies, the succession plan, the notebook, and my father's archive.
One board member resigned before I finished.
Another tried to call the evidence incomplete.
Rachel asked permission to speak.
I didn't.
"Go ahead."
She stood in her catering uniform.
"For three years, staff were told donor complaints mattered more than employee complaints."
Marcus followed.
Then Howard.
Then Lily.
Lily placed her mother's termination letter on the table.
"She found duplicate invoices. You fired her."
Nobody answered.
She looked at every board member who had ignored her at the gala.
"Last night, Ms. Carlisle accused me of stealing. Most of you watched."
A few people lowered their eyes.
"That's the problem," Lily said. "You only notice us when someone important tells you to."
The room went silent.
Then Daniel's phone buzzed.
He read the message.
"Grant Carlisle just left the estate."
"Police let him leave?"
"He isn't under arrest."
"Where is he going?"
May you like
Daniel looked at me.
"Meridian Legacy's downtown office."
