Chapter 17 - The Man Who Looked Away

Dr. Malcolm Reed had spent the gala ten feet from the fountain.
I remembered him perfectly.
He had once given a speech about dignity in healthcare.
When Vanessa tripped me, he watched the floor.
Now his initials appeared beside Grant's on eighteen transactions.
Malcolm was Lakeshore Memorial's chief operating officer.
He controlled vendor implementation after the board approved contracts.
Evelyn created access.
Grant created vendor pressure.
Peter moved money.
Malcolm made the fake services look real inside the hospital.
When confronted, Malcolm denied everything.
Then Priya showed him one invoice.
It billed $38,000 for pediatric transport coordination during a month when our actual transport partner had already been paid in full.
Malcolm had signed both approvals.
"Why?" I asked.
"Don't answer."
"Parents were told we couldn't afford rides home. You signed duplicate invoices. Why?"
"Because Grant said the money would come back through donations."
"Did it?"
"Some of it."
"Enough?"
Malcolm agreed to cooperate.
His records led to $2.3 million in questionable payments over four years.
More than our first estimate.
The next morning, the story broke publicly.
Reporters crowded the sidewalk outside Lakeshore.
Vanessa's name trended anyway after a guest posted the video of her tripping me.
She lost two brand partnerships in one afternoon.
She called me.
"I deserve what's happening," she said.
"Some of it."
"Can I do anything useful?"
I thought of Lily.
"Tell the truth. Publicly. Don't make yourself the victim."
She did.
Her statement admitted the trip was deliberate.
She apologized to me, Lily, Rachel, Marcus, Howard, and the staff she had mistreated.
Then she added one sentence her father probably hated more than all the others.
