Chapter 20 - A Way Back

One year after Audrey pushed me into the lake, Northpoint Landing opened its rebuilt public walkway. The new ramps were wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass, the fishing slips had safe handrails, and the boathouse doors stood open to everyone again.

We didn't call the project a triumph. Some workers had lost wages they would never fully recover. Several families had lived through months of fear. Audrey was serving her sentence, and I still woke sometimes feeling cold water close over my head.

But the docks were working. Jonah managed the repair shop with an honesty that sometimes made our meetings uncomfortable. I had given him a reason to distrust me; he gave me the chance to earn something better.

Delia supervised the ribbon cutting. Theo Briggs, now a full-time mechanic, tightened the last bolt on a new safety railing. Sonia Park had started a different job after cooperating with investigators. I sent her a note thanking her for telling the truth when it was hardest.

At the ceremony, a little girl asked why the old photograph of Nora was hanging beside the entrance.

"She believed everyone deserved a way to the water," I told her. "And a way back."

My new chair had a safety system installed by professionals, with a small red control I could reach beneath the armrest. I rested my fingers near it, not because I was afraid to live, but because Nora had taught me that being careful could be another form of freedom.

Jonah rolled a second chair onto the dock for a visitor. Then he came back and stood beside me, looking out over the lake.

"Ready to go home, Dad?"

I watched the water for one more breath. It had almost taken my life, but not my right to choose what came next.

"Yeah," I said. "Let's go home."

He walked beside me, matching my pace without touching the handles. Behind us, people laughed on the pier, children asked for bait, and boats knocked softly against their lines.

Nora's old handwritten words were painted above the boathouse door.

ALWAYS LEAVE HIM A WAY BACK.

This time, I had one.
