Chapter 3 - Three Hours Earlier

The emergency call had been logged at 5:42 p.m. Audrey told the dispatcher I was making irrational accusations and might wander toward the water. At 8:46, she watched my wheelchair go over the dock.

"She was building an explanation," I told Miriam Shaw, my attorney, when she arrived at the hospital after midnight.

Miriam laid her coat over a chair. We'd known each other thirty years.

"Tell me every word," she said.

I told her about the brakes. The shove. Audrey's phone. After Nora died four years ago, I'd let Audrey run Vale Marine Works. She had always been sharp, impatient, and eager to be trusted. I thought giving her responsibility would help her through grief. Instead, I stopped asking questions because she said questions made her feel small.

Three months earlier, I discovered payments to a company called Breakwater Advisory. The firm had no employees I could identify, yet our books showed nearly two million dollars in consulting fees. Part of that money came from a state-backed program meant to make the waterfront accessible to people with disabilities.

When I demanded invoices, Audrey brought me signature pages instead.

"It's a refinancing package," she said. "Just sign, Dad. We can discuss details later."

I refused. Yesterday I told her an independent accountant would come on Friday. Tonight she offered to take me to the pier to talk privately about Nora.

Miriam's mouth tightened. "Where are the original records?"

"I don't know. Audrey changed the office locks last week."

"And Jonah?"

My son hadn't spoken to me in eighteen months. Audrey said he'd stolen company money. I'd believed her without letting him explain.

Miriam went quiet. Then she took out her tablet and showed me an electronic notice filed that afternoon: an emergency petition asking the court to appoint Audrey as my guardian.

Attached was a doctor's letter declaring that I could no longer manage my own decisions.

The doctor's signature looked familiar.

Because the doctor had been dead for eleven months.
