Chapter 10 - THE POLICE CHIEF

By sunrise, Ryan no longer knew what institution he could trust.
Father Ben connected them with Detective Mara Ruiz from the state police, a woman who had investigated Victor once and been forced off the case.
She met them in the back room of a closed diner.
Ruiz studied Owen for a long time.
"DNA first," she said. "Then we talk."
Ryan slid the ledger across the table.
She stopped smiling.
"Where did you get this?"
"My mother."
Ruiz photographed every page.
"Victor Shaw has spent thirty years making himself useful to dangerous people. Judges, developers, cops. But money laundering isn't why he's after you."
"Then why?"
She pointed to Mercer Development documents Owen had carried out.
"Your company owns twelve acres around the new harbor project. Once the federal redevelopment contract is announced, those parcels triple in value. Victor needs control before Friday."
Friday was three days away.
Owen rubbed his face. "That's why he wanted the trust signed."
"And why Caroline needed Ryan declared incompetent if the signatures were challenged," Ruiz said.
Ryan felt anger burn through him. "She was going to say I was mentally unstable?"
Ruiz looked uncomfortable.
"She already started."
She showed him medical forms filed two months earlier by a private psychiatrist.
Episodes of paranoia. Memory loss. Aggression.
Ryan had never met the doctor.
Every page contained Caroline's statements.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Chief Harlan spoke.
"Ryan, I have Caroline with me. She's safe. Your father-in-law says you're having some kind of breakdown."
Ryan looked at Ruiz.
Harlan continued gently.
"Bring the girls home. We can fix this."
Then, faintly in the background, Ryan heard Caroline scream:
May you like
"DON'T COME HERE!"
The line went dead.
