Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE CAROLINE CHOSE

Darkness swallowed the bedroom.
Lily screamed.
Ryan grabbed both children and pulled them close. Somewhere downstairs, glass shattered.
Owen whispered, "That's not the police."
A flashlight beam swept beneath the bedroom door.
Caroline had disappeared.
"Where did she go?" Ryan asked.
Owen pointed toward the vent. "There are passages everywhere."
Ryan's skin prickled.
He had renovated old houses for a living. He knew every visible inch of this place, or thought he did. Caroline had insisted on buying it three years earlier, calling it charming and private.
Now he understood why.
The bedroom knob turned.
Ryan shoved a dresser against the door.
A man's voice outside said, "Mr. Mercer? Security."
Owen shook his head hard.
Ryan stayed silent.
The knob stopped turning.
Then came three slow knocks.
The same pattern from the steel door.
Owen whispered, "Victor's people use that signal."
Ryan led the children through the wall passage. Owen limped behind them.
At an intersection hidden behind plaster, Ryan found something impossible: electrical conduit, fresh drywall screws, and printed floor plans taped to a stud.
The plans were dated eighteen months before Ryan and Caroline bought the house.
Client: C. Shaw.
Caroline had commissioned the hidden rooms before they ever moved in.
Ryan stared at her initials.
"She didn't choose this house," he whispered. "She built the trap first."
A shot exploded from the bedroom.
Wood splintered through the vent.
Emma buried her face in Owen's chest.
Ryan looked down the passage and saw two routes.
Lily pointed left.
"Mommy goes that way."
Ryan followed.
At the end, behind a sliding panel, he found a small office.
On the desk sat six passports.

Three of them had Ryan's photograph.
Only one had his name.
