Chapter 18 - THE LAST LIE

State troopers swarmed the marina seconds later.

Victor was arrested. Caroline was alive; the bullet had passed through her upper arm.

But Victor's final words stayed inside Ryan's head.

Ask your brother.

At the hospital, Ryan confronted Owen.

"What murder order?"

Owen looked away.

"Tell me."

Owen sat beside Emma's bed and spoke quietly.

Before he was locked in the wall, Victor had made him sign one final document as "Ryan Mercer." Owen thought it authorized a security payment.

It was actually a contract with a private firm.

The target was Ryan.

"I didn't read it," Owen said. "I wanted the money and I didn't read it."

Ryan's anger came so fast he saw white.

"You signed my death warrant."

"Yes."

"And then you came into my house?"

"Because I found out what it was. I tried to steal it back. Caroline caught me. That's when everything blew up."

Caroline, pale in a nearby bed, said, "He's telling the truth."

Ryan looked at both of them.

His wife had lied to him for years.

His brother had worn his name.

Victor had built his life around secrets before Ryan was old enough to understand them.

"I'm done," Ryan said.

Caroline began crying. "Ryan—"

"My name might not even be Ryan."

The words silenced everyone.

Ruiz entered with a folder.

"Actually," she said, "we settled that."

Dental records from age nine, matched with their mother's notes and school records, confirmed the switch.

The man everyone had called Ryan for twenty-two years was Owen Mercer.

The man hidden in the wall was Ryan Mercer.

Lily looked confused.

"Do I call you Uncle Owen now?"

Ryan—Owen—knelt beside her.

"You call me Daddy. Always."

Ruiz waited until Lily hugged him.

Then she said, "There's one more problem."

She opened the folder.

Mercer Development legally belonged to Ryan.

The other brother.
