Chapter 19 - WHAT A NAME IS WORTH

The newspapers called it the Mercer Identity Scandal.

Owen hated every headline. For thirty-six years he had answered to Ryan; now reporters shouted a different name at him as if a court filing could rearrange a lifetime overnight.

For weeks, lawyers argued over names, shares, trusts, marriages, and whether decades of documents were valid.

The simplest fact was also the hardest: the company Owen had built his entire adult life legally belonged to Ryan, the brother who had been stolen from the family.

Owen offered him everything.

Ryan stared across the conference table. "You built it."

"Under your name."

"A name you thought was yours," Ryan said. "I'm not stealing your life because Dad stole mine."

They both laughed for the first time.

It sounded broken, but real.

They agreed to split the company equally after restitution to investors harmed by Victor's fraud.

Chief Harlan was indicted. Victor faced charges for kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, attempted murder, and the decades-old cover-up surrounding their mother's death.

Caroline accepted a plea agreement for fraud and unlawful confinement in exchange for testimony. Because she had helped save the children and produced the recording, prosecutors did not seek the maximum sentence.

Owen visited her once before sentencing.

"Did you ever love me?" he asked.

She looked at him through the glass.

"That was the one thing I never lied about."

He believed her.

That made it worse.

"Lily deserves a mother who tells the truth."

"I know."

"Then start now."

When Owen returned home, demolition crews were opening every hidden passage in the house.

He refused to sell it.

"Why keep this place?" Ryan asked.

Owen watched Lily and Emma draw on a stripped wall together.

"Because I'm tired of letting bad people decide what a house means."

A worker called from upstairs.

"Mr. Mercer? You need to see this."

May you like

Behind the last sealed wall, they had found a small metal box.

On top was Ryan and Owen's mother's name.
