Chapter 1 - The Sound of Breaking Glass

The richest woman in the room dumped dinner over a six-year-old boy, and nobody moved.

Noah Moreno dropped to his knees on the ballroom's marble floor.

Warm gravy soaked his white shirt.

His fingers closed around the back of a chair, but Vivian Ashcroft kicked it away before he could pull himself up.

"You don't belong here," she said.

Thirty tables fell silent beneath the chandeliers.

A waiter stood frozen with a water pitcher.

Nobody wanted to offend the woman whose name was written above the ballroom doors.

Then Leah Moreno came running in.

Her midnight-blue dress caught on a table corner, and she tore it free without stopping.

"Noah!"

He reached for her like someone drowning.

"Aunt Leah, I didn't do anything."

"I know."

She lifted him against her shoulder and faced Vivian.

"Get away from him."

Vivian's eyes narrowed.

"You were told to stay backstage."

"And you were told he was a guest, not your punching bag."

Vivian slapped her.

The sound cracked through the room.

Leah tasted blood where her teeth caught her cheek, but she kept one arm around Noah.

"Touch him again," Leah said, "and every person here will know what you are."

Vivian reached into her silver evening clutch.

A black handgun appeared in her hand.

Somebody screamed.

Noah buried his face in Leah's neck.

Leah had no time to think about being brave.

She caught Vivian's wrist, pushed it away from the child, and stumbled with her into a champagne display.

Glass burst across the marble.

A wine cart overturned.

A security guard rushed forward, kicked the fallen handgun away, and pinned it beneath an overturned serving tray until the police could take it.

"Call 911!" Leah shouted.

Vivian stood amid the broken crystal, breathing hard.

Her expensive hair had come loose.

She wasn't staring at the gun.

She was staring at Noah.

"You should have kept your mouth shut," she whispered.

Leah felt the boy tremble.

"What did you say to her, honey?"

May you like

Noah's answer was barely audible.

"I asked why she locked Mommy's blue door."
