Chapter 11 - Nineteen Missing Minutes

The foundation's lawyers claimed Leah had left Noah unattended for nineteen minutes at the gala.
They repeated the number in court papers and television interviews until it sounded like a fact.
"I went to change in the dressing room," Leah told Amir.
"A staff member said Noah would stay with the other children."
"Who was the staff member?"
"A woman with a gold name badge. I never got her name."
Jade sent them a portion of the ballroom's event schedule.
It listed a private children's reception that had been canceled an hour before guests arrived.
Nobody had told Leah.
Price obtained the venue's hallway footage under a warrant.
It showed a hostess leading Noah from the dressing room toward the stage.
Colin Rusk met them beside a service elevator and waved the hostess away.
"Why was he handling a six-year-old?" Amir asked.
On the recording, Rusk bent to Noah's level and spoke into his ear.
No audio survived, but the child stepped back.
Rusk took him by the hand and led him into the ballroom.
A second camera caught Vivian waiting beside the head table.
She pointed toward a plate.
Noah shook his head.
Then he gestured at her bracelet.
"He recognized the silver birds," Leah whispered.
The footage ended before the food was dumped, but Jade's recording picked up the next seconds from across the room.
Together, the videos destroyed the claim that Noah had wandered into danger by himself.
When Amir called with the news, Noah was making a card for Miriam.
"Can I use glitter?" he asked.
"All of it," Leah said, and gave him the biggest jar.
Then Price called again.

Rusk had arranged for the original hallway recordings to be deleted.
The security company's off-site backup had preserved them anyway.
