Chapter 17 - The Woman Behind the Order

Rusk's cooperation did not make him innocent.

Price told Leah that before they spoke about anything else.

"He chose to obey," she said.

"Now he's trying to reduce his exposure by telling us what Vivian ordered. We'll test every claim against the evidence."

Rusk admitted that the foundation had redirected grant money to the ballroom renovation.

He said Vivian feared Rachel's report would cost her donors, her board position, and control of the property company carrying her family's name.

When the alarm sounded, Rusk called her.

According to his statement, Vivian told him to keep the west corridor closed until staff removed the files Rachel had assembled.

He passed that instruction to the monitoring desk.

"Did she know people were inside?" Amir asked when Price briefed them.

"Rusk says he told her. We have the call records, and we're still working on the exact words."

Investigators also interviewed retired inspector Warren Keene.

He acknowledged he had not visited Harbor House on the date recorded in the inspection file.

His login had been used without his permission, and he had failed to report the false certificate when he found out.

He faced his own questions about that silence.

The prosecutor filed new charges connected to the fire and the falsified records.

Vivian remained under strict release conditions while the court considered the case.

At the first public hearing, reporters lined the courthouse steps.

Leah walked past them with Miriam at her side.

She did not bring Noah.

Inside, Vivian sat in a plain gray suit.

No diamonds.

No silver birds.

She looked at Leah as though the ballroom floor were still between them.

Leah remembered all the guests who had stayed silent.

She remembered Rachel's note and Noah's trembling hands.

Then she looked away.

The prosecutor began reading from the recovered texts.
