Chapter 18 - What Money Could Not Buy

The investigation took months.

There were forensic reviews, motions, testimony, and arguments over every timestamp.

Leah learned that telling the truth did not make the legal process quick.

It only made persistence necessary.

Luis testified about the chain.

Mina explained the missing safety funds.

The monitoring technician identified Rusk's voice.

Miriam described Rachel carrying children down the stairs.

A defense attorney suggested Rachel had ignored instructions and put herself in danger.

"She was helping residents evacuate," Miriam replied.

"That's what they paid her to do."

He tried to interrupt.

The judge told him to let her finish.

"She went back because someone called for help," Miriam said.

"She believed that blue door would open. Any decent person would have believed it."

Noah was not called to testify.

Investigators had carefully recorded his account through a trained child interviewer, but the adults' documents, recordings, and testimony carried the case.

Leah was thankful he did not have to defend his mother's memory from a witness chair.

Vivian's lawyers argued that the chain was a temporary safety measure and that Rusk had acted without her approval during the fire.

The prosecutor showed the jury the message ordering the files saved first.

Then came the building plan, the photographs, and the recording.

At a break, Leah found Jade waiting in the hallway.

"You could do a big interview," Jade said.

"People would listen."

"Maybe someday. Right now Noah needs me at home."

Jade put away her recorder.

"Then that's where you should be."

That night, Noah climbed beside Leah on the couch.

"If Mommy saved those kids," he asked, "does it count even though she didn't get out?"

Leah put her arms around him.

"It counts more than I can tell you."

The next morning, the jury announced it had reached a verdict.
