Chapter 11 - THE DEBT THAT CAME BACKCarlos's father, Uncle Mateo, had died when I was sixteen. He was charming, funny, always buying everyone ice cream with money he never seemed to have.

Mom remembered a different man.

"He begged your dad to use the house as collateral for his business," she told me. "Your father refused. Mateo said family shouldn't turn its back on family."

"So this goes back twenty years?"

"The anger does. Your cousin learned it from him."

Eleanor investigated the old records. There was no legitimate mortgage against Mom's property. But Carlos had recently taken large private loans, and a lender had filed a claim against one of his businesses. He needed cash fast.

"Enough to try stealing a house?" I asked.

"People have done worse for less," Eleanor said. "We still need proof of what motivated these specific acts."

Chen had more. Warren Bell supplied text messages showing Carlos paid him to stamp documents. Another conversation included an attachment titled RUTH SIGNATURE SAMPLE. It was a photograph taken from Mom's old driver's license.

But Lorena hadn't just played along. Banking records obtained through the investigation suggested money had been routed through an account connected to her. She had made calls to assisted-living facilities and asked whether a resident could be admitted without family involvement.

When I heard that, I had to step outside. I stood beside the courthouse parking lot, remembering every birthday card Lorena had signed LOVE ALWAYS, MOM beneath her name.

Eleanor joined me.

"I keep thinking I should've known," I said.

"You know now. The question is what you do with it."

Her phone rang. She listened, then went still.

"The buyer's attorney just sent an email," she said. "They're threatening to sue your mother for backing out of the sale."

Attached was a document showing a deposit of seventy-five thousand dollars.

And the person listed as receiving that deposit was Lorena.
