Chapter 5 - SOMEONE WAS STILL INSIDEI answered without speaking.

I heard a drawer close. Then a man's voice said, "The blue tin isn't in the kitchen."

It wasn't Carlos. The voice was younger, impatient.

"Who is this?" I asked.

The call ended.

Detective Chen noticed my face change. I handed her the phone and repeated what I'd heard. She called Ortiz to check the property while I went back to Mom.

She was awake, staring at the dark window. "Did they find the house?"

"The papers? Yes. We're working on it."

"Not the papers. Your father's blue tin."

She gripped the blanket. "I hid it when Lorena started searching the attic. Your dad made me promise I wouldn't open it until you came home."

"Where is it?"

"Under the floor in the old sewing room. The plank with the brass nail."

She closed her eyes, exhausted. I stayed beside her until the nurse came back, then called Detective Chen. She agreed to document the tin as possible evidence. Neither of us wanted Carlos getting there first.

We reached the house just after midnight. Ortiz had cleared the rooms, but a rear window stood open and the sewing-room rug had been dragged aside.

"They searched here," Chen said.

I knelt and found the brass nail. Under the loose plank sat a dented blue cookie tin. Someone had pried at its edge without finding the hidden latch beneath the label.

Inside was my father's handwriting, a bank statement, and a small digital recorder wrapped in tissue.

The first page said: FOR DANIEL, IF ANYONE EVER TRIES TO TAKE THIS HOUSE.

I pressed play on the recorder.

My father's voice filled the room.

"Danny, if you're hearing this, it means somebody in our family lied to you."
