Chapter 18 - THE LAST LIELorena's final accusation was that I'd threatened to kill her on the night I came home. She handed police an edited audio clip of me shouting in the kitchen and claimed it proved I'd been violent for years.

For a terrible hour I wondered whether the truth could survive another distortion.

Then June's doorbell recording supplied the missing beginning of the encounter. Ortiz's body camera preserved Lorena's first account, which contradicted later details. And my own emergency call had started before she claimed I'd locked her in the pantry.

Chen told me the investigation would evaluate all evidence fairly. She didn't ask me to trust a quick verdict. She asked me to keep cooperating.

Lorena was taken into custody in connection with the documented financial scheme and Mom's removal from the hospital, subject to the decisions of prosecutors and the court. Carlos faced charges of his own. No one was suddenly vindicated by a single dramatic speech. The case would take months.

At our first court appearance, Lorena looked across the aisle and mouthed, You ruined everything.

I almost responded. Instead I took Mom's hand.

Later, Eleanor showed us the emergency order and the records confirming that the disputed transfer would not go forward. Additional civil proceedings would resolve the forged instruments and the trust's title. The house wasn't sold. Mom would have her say.

That should have been the end of the danger.

But a week before Mom's testimony, a white envelope arrived with no return address. Inside was a photograph of her asleep in the hospital.

On the back, written in black ink, were six words:

SHE WON'T REMEMBER IT IN COURT.
