Chapter 12 - MARA'S FATHER

Mara's father was not dead before she was born.

He had worked as a union investigator on Thorne construction sites.

Eleanor met him while tracing missing payroll funds.

When Mara was two months old, Thomas agreed to testify before a federal grand jury.

"How do you know this?" Mara asked Matteo.

He opened an old Bellandi archive file.

Carlo had kept a copy of Thomas's witness statement.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

T.W. MOVED UNDER FEDERAL PROTECTION. LOCATION UNKNOWN.

Mara stopped breathing.

"He might be alive."

"Might," Matteo said carefully.

Julian contacted a retired federal marshal.

The answer came three hours later.

Thomas Whitfield had entered witness protection twenty-eight years ago.

He died six years later in Arizona from cancer.

Mara sat alone for a while.

Dead for twenty-two.

Her mother had carried the truth alone.

Then the marshal revealed one more thing.

Thomas recorded a sealed deposition before his death.

It had never been released because the original corruption case collapsed.

Federal prosecutors reopened the file.

Thomas's video showed a younger Senator Thorne authorizing payments to violent contractors who intimidated union workers and witnesses.

Victor Saye.

Another name appeared in the margins.

Carlo Bellandi.

But Thomas described Carlo differently.

"Bellandi came to me after the threats started. He said Thorne was using his people without authorization. He offered to move my family. Eleanor refused because she wanted the case finished."

Matteo watched his father on the edge of the story, neither innocent nor simple.

Then the deposition reached its final minute.

"If anything happens to me, Richard Thorne is not acting alone. Someone inside the U.S. Attorney's Office is protecting him."

Chen swore softly.

The retired marshal gave them the old prosecutor's name.

The same judge scheduled to hear Victor's trust petition the next morning.
