Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN HER MOTHER HAD BEEN

Mara remembered her mother as tired hands and peppermint tea.

Eleanor Whitfield had spent Mara's childhood taking cleaning jobs, bookkeeping shifts, and anything else that kept rent paid. She never spoke about the years before Mara was born.

Apparently, those years had teeth.

Julian showed her employment records from Thorne Civic Partners.

Eleanor had been a junior accountant.

Then a senior reconciliation analyst.

Her employment ended the same week a federal corruption inquiry quietly disappeared.

"What was she investigating?" Mara asked.

Matteo answered. "Money moving through public construction contracts."

"Your money?"

"Some of it. My father's people used companies that Senator Thorne also used. I don't know how much my father knew."

Mara laughed bitterly. "Convenient."

"Very. That's why I don't trust it."

Preston Hale walked in.

Mara's entire body went cold.

Bianca's husband looked older than he had three years ago. Better suit. Worse eyes.

"Mara."

Matteo stepped between them.

"You have five seconds to explain why you're here."

Preston looked at him, then at Mara's bruised face.

"Bianca told her father what happened. Senator Thorne sent people to the cemetery."

"Why?" Mara asked.

"For the bracelet."

Preston swallowed.

"Eleanor gave it to me once. Before she died. She said if anyone ever came asking about a ledger, I was supposed to tell you to look inside the clasp."

Mara stared at him.

"You knew?"

"Not what it meant."

"You had three years to tell me."

His shame was answer enough.

Matteo took the bracelet from the pouch and examined the broken clasp.

A jeweler's pin from Julian's kit released a hidden plate.

Inside was a thin strip of metal stamped with six numbers.

A bank vault code.

Preston whispered, "That's what Thorne wants."

Mara looked at the man who had once promised to marry her, then abandoned her when Bianca Thorne offered him money, influence, and a place inside her father's political machine.

"Why are you helping me now?"

Preston looked toward the door.

"Because Bianca thinks the baby is mine."

"It isn't."

"I know."

Mara froze.

"How?"

May you like

Preston's face went pale.

"Because her father had you followed."
