Chapter 13 - THE JUDGE
Judge Malcolm Vale recused himself thirty-seven minutes before the hearing.
Federal agents arrived at his chambers with a warrant.
The Bellandi board vote collapsed with Victor's trust authority frozen.
For the first time in days, Mara thought they had space to breathe.
Then Bianca asked to speak with her.
Mara agreed only with Chen present.
Bianca sat behind glass in county custody, designer polish gone, anger still sharp.
"My father is going to kill me."
Mara stared.
"You want sympathy?"
"No. I want protection."
"You slapped a pregnant woman at her mother's grave."
Bianca looked down.
"I know."
"You tried to frame me as unstable."
"My father ordered the petition. I signed it."
"That does not make you less responsible."
"I know."
Mara believed that part.
Bianca offered a location.
An abandoned Thorne estate on Long Island where Victor stored blackmail files.
"Why tell me?"
"Because my father told Victor I was disposable."
Not redemption.
Self-preservation.
Still useful.
Police searched the property.
They found files on politicians, business owners, prosecutors, union leaders, and members of the Bellandi family.
They also found surveillance photographs of Mara going back three years.
One photograph showed Eleanor's funeral.
Victor stood in the background.
Another showed Mara outside a bar five months earlier.
The night she met Matteo.
Another showed Matteo entering twenty-three minutes later.
Then Julian found a planning note.
SUBJECT WHITFIELD CONTACT WITH BELLANDI HEIR: ALLOW CONTACT. MONITOR RESULT.
Mara felt sick.
"They let us meet?"
Matteo stared at the page.
"No."
"It says allow contact."
"They saw us after we arrived. That doesn't mean they arranged it."
Chen examined the timestamp.
The note had been created two hours before Mara entered the bar.
Everyone went silent.
Mara looked at Matteo.
"Someone knew I would be there."
May you like
"And someone knew I would too."
Their supposedly accidental night had not been entirely accidental.
