Chapter 15 - Charlotte's Second Signature

Charlotte asked to speak with Amina before the next police interview.
They met in a small attorney room with glass walls.
Charlotte looked nothing like the woman who had entered the boutique the day before.
No makeup.
No jewelry.
No armor.
Amina placed the pension pledge between them.
"You signed it."
Charlotte nodded.
"I did."
"Why?"
"Because Bernard said the company would miss payroll if I didn't."
"And you believed him?"
"I believed what I needed to believe."
Amina didn't soften.
Charlotte looked through the glass at Antoine in the hallway.
"He signed first."
"He says he signed a different packet."
"He did."
Amina stared.
Charlotte slid a memory card across the table.
"I recorded Bernard changing the pages after Antoine signed."
"Why record him?"
"Because by then I knew he would sacrifice me if anything surfaced."
On the card was a video from Bernard's office.
He removed a signature page from one document and inserted it into another.
Fraud in plain sight.
Then he called someone.
Amina turned up the volume.
"The boy signed," Bernard said. "Move the collateral tonight."
A man's voice answered.
Amina knew it immediately.
Philippe Garnier.
The board director who had just demanded to know what Amina was claiming.
Charlotte leaned back.
"Bernard wasn't the only one."
Amina paused the recording.
"How many?"
"Four directors. Two bankers. One ministry official."
"Names."
Charlotte gave them.
Then she said, "There's one more."
Amina waited.
May you like
Charlotte's eyes filled.
"Someone at Kora Capital has been feeding them information about your audit plans for months.
