Chapter 19 - What Amina Chose

The easy choice would have been to let Beaumont collapse.
Amina had enough leverage to do it.
Banks were nervous.
Suppliers were furious.
The brand's name was bleeding across every financial newsroom in Europe.
But eleven thousand employees had not forged Mariam's signature.
They had not stolen pension money.
They had not chased her mother through the rain.
So Amina chose something harder.
Kora converted part of its debt into a monitored rescue facility.
Independent trustees took control of the pension reserve.
Every executive payment required dual approval.
Antoine resigned as president and agreed to cooperate with investigators.
He did not ask Amina to protect him.
That was the first respectable thing he had done since she met him.
Charlotte accepted responsibility for assaulting Leila and for the documents she knowingly signed. In exchange for nothing promised, she turned over every recording she had made of Bernard and her father.
Étienne Delacroix was arrested after doctors cleared him for transfer.
Bernard remained in custody.
Samuel Grant resigned from Kora and gave a full statement.
Amina refused to see him again.
Some betrayals could be understood without being forgiven.
Three weeks later, Leila met Amina inside the Montaigne boutique.
The store was still closed.
Workers were counting inventory shelf by shelf.
"Are you going to reopen it?" Leila asked.
"Eventually."
"Same name?"
Amina looked up at BEAUMONT carved above the interior arch.
"Not exactly."
She handed Leila a draft design.
The new plaque read:
BEAUMONT - DIALLO
FOUNDERS: MARIAM DIALLO & BERNARD BEAUMONT
Leila smiled.
Then Marc hurried from the office carrying one final archive envelope.
"Madame Diallo. We found this behind the original wall safe."

On the front, in Mariam's handwriting, were four words.
FOR AMINA, WHEN READY.
