Chapter 15 - The Man Behind the Signature

Grant claimed he fixed difficult land deals. Now Daniel knew he meant fixing the paperwork, not the problems.
Aaron explained that the county contractor account had limited technical permissions, not the authority to issue final approvals. Someone had apparently used it to attach a forged engineering signature and mark the revision as accepted.
Investigators requested the logs and took custody of the red folder and maps.
Meanwhile, a financial investigator reviewing records obtained through lawful requests traced payments from Northline to Vale Family Solutions. Vanessa's company had billed for "family stabilization consulting" the week she began keeping the bad-day notebook.
"I thought she liked Lily," Daniel said to Nora that evening. "She remembered her favorite cereal. She learned how to braid her hair."
"That can be true and still not make her safe," Nora replied.
June came in carrying a tray of sandwiches. Lily followed with a paper crown she'd made for her father.
"You're the king of not burning toast," she announced.
"It's a demanding position," Daniel said solemnly.
For an hour they ate and joked like an ordinary family. The relief was fragile, but it was real.
Then Mara arrived with the latest court notice.
An emergency hearing would take place the next morning. Northline was pressing the sale application despite the disputed signatures, arguing that delays could jeopardize an opportunity to fund Lily's care.
"They want a judge to believe an abusive home needs money more than it needs protection," Daniel said.
"Then we show the judge the documents, the real videos, and the people who can explain them."
Mara handed him one additional filing.
Northline claimed it already held a valid access easement across the meadow. Its attached deed carried Daniel's and Nora's signatures.

Neither of them had signed it.
And according to the county records, construction equipment was scheduled to enter the property at dawn.
