Chapter 19 - Water Finds Its Way

Daniel didn't drive into the storm. He called emergency services, sent Aaron's location, and warned Alma Bishop that the block might need to move to higher ground.

The county drainage crew reached the old channel with police assistance. Someone had piled temporary fill and construction barriers across the inlet. The water had nowhere to go but toward Alder Street.

Alma and her neighbors moved their cars uphill while firefighters checked the lowest homes. Daniel stayed on the phone with Aaron until the crew began clearing the obstruction with equipment designed for the job.

Water rushed into the restored channel. On Alder Street, the level stopped rising at the bottom step of Alma's porch.

"Tell Lily her mommy was right," Alma said over the phone. "That meadow held."

Later, investigators documented the obstruction, along with Northline's unauthorized work preparations and the suspect permit records. The county suspended the related approvals pending a formal review. Grant and Vanessa were questioned separately about their roles; the district attorney's office would decide what charges the evidence supported.

There was no instant verdict, only witnesses and a growing record of what people had hidden.

Daniel returned home soaked from the short walk between his car and the front door. Lily met him in dry pajamas, holding a towel almost as big as she was.

"June said you helped the neighbors."

"A lot of people helped them."

"Did you get scared?"

"Yeah," he admitted. "I did."

She took his hand. "Me too. When Vanessa dumped that water. I thought maybe she was right and nobody was coming."

Daniel knelt until they were eye to eye.

"She was wrong. And I should have been paying attention long before that day."

"I know."

"Do you?"

Lily nodded, then looked at the rain running down the window.

"Daddy, I think I know why she was so afraid of June's phone."

May you like

"Why?"

"Because on the video, you could finally see me."
