Chapter 8 - The Street That Disappeared

Inside the red folder were construction drawings, payment schedules, and two versions of the same drainage map.
The first showed the meadow absorbing runoff from a proposed commercial development. The second showed that retention area removed. Water would instead funnel toward Alder Street, a low-lying neighborhood three blocks from Daniel's home.
Across the second drawing, a red stamp read APPROVED FOR COST SAVINGS.
Daniel had spent fifteen years managing building projects. He knew exactly what a missing drainage basin could mean after a Georgia thunderstorm.
"These aren't harmless sketches," he said.
Mara studied the dates. "Are they signed?"
"One is. The engineer of record is Aaron Pike. I know him. He wouldn't approve this without a hydraulic analysis."
At the bottom lay a consulting agreement between Northline Development and a company called Vale Family Solutions. Vanessa was listed as its owner. Her fee depended on completion of the meadow purchase.
"Two separate businesses," Mara said. "One makes the land deal happen. The other gets paid when it does."
"And Lily was the lever."
They copied the documents for investigators and returned the originals to the officer for evidence handling.
Daniel called Aaron Pike. The engineer listened, then asked him to describe the stamp.
"That approval isn't mine," Aaron said. "My office rejected the revision last year."
"Can you prove it?"
"If the old files are still intact."
A long silence followed.
"Daniel, I need you to understand something. Alder Street has flooded before. Claire was the person who made me look into it."
His late wife's name hit him harder than the rest.
"Claire knew about Northline?"
"She knew they were trying to erase a neighborhood from the model."

Aaron lowered his voice.
"And whoever made that new drawing knows exactly whose homes will flood first."
