Chapter 18 - The Words They Cut Out

Mercer described a troubled child, an overwhelmed father, and a recommendation for residential observation. His language sounded polished enough to be printed on a brochure.

Mara asked one question.

"What time did you examine Lily Hart on the date listed in your report?"

"Approximately eleven in the morning."

She showed him the appointment log his own office had supplied in response to the court's order. There was no appointment for Lily. Then she presented the aquarium admission records and time-stamped photographs showing father and daughter together that morning.

Mercer cleared his throat. "My staff may have entered the date incorrectly."

"Did you personally meet this child before signing the report?"

He looked toward Vanessa.

"I relied on collateral information."

"So the sentence stating you observed her in person was false?"

His attorney objected to the phrasing. The judge directed Mercer to answer the factual question. After a long pause, he admitted he had not examined Lily in person.

June's garden recording was reviewed. So was the complete tablet video showing Vanessa coaching Lily into saying she was scared of her father. Mara did not ask Lily to appear or repeat anything in open court.

Daniel sat with his hands clenched beneath the table. When the unedited clip played, he heard his daughter's tiny voice ask, "Can I say it the way it really happened?"

Vanessa's reply came instantly.

"No. Say it the way I told you."

The judge ordered the disputed trust sale and easement held pending further proceedings, declined the emergency request to remove Daniel as trustee, and directed the questionable records to appropriate investigators. The broader investigation was far from finished, but the immediate attempt had failed.

Outside, Mara finally let herself smile.

"You get to take your daughter home."

Daniel's phone rang before he could answer. Aaron was calling from Alder Street.

"It's raining hard," Aaron said. "And water's already backing up near the old channel."

Then he said the words Daniel feared most.

"Someone has blocked the culvert."
