Chapter 13 - The Message Before the Barbecue

The recovered message was brief. Vanessa had written to Eric: Tomorrow has to settle it. If Daniel won't sign, we need another way to get him out of the vote. Eric had replied: Make sure the boy stays inside.
The message did not prove what Vanessa had put in the glass, but it established that she and Eric had discussed Daniel's ability to participate in the upcoming company vote. It also contradicted Vanessa's claim that the barbecue incident had been an innocent misunderstanding.
The lab confirmed that the substance recovered from the dropper matched the medication found in the glass. The specialist explained that it could cause serious impairment, depending on the amount absorbed and the person's health. Daniel had not consumed any, so no one could say exactly what would have happened to him.
Vanessa was arrested and charged with attempted poisoning and related offenses. Eric was questioned about the financial transfers and the messages, but investigators made clear that charges would depend on the evidence against him. He denied directing Vanessa to harm Daniel.
When Daniel told Jake about the arrest, he avoided making promises about what would happen next. “The legal process takes time,” he said. “But she can't come here and frighten you.”
“I thought if I could prove it, everything would go back to normal.”
Daniel sat beside him. “Normal wasn't safe for you. We'll build something better, even if it takes time.”
That night, Jake slept in his own room for the first time since the barbecue. Daniel left the hall light on and checked the door only once, resisting the urge to keep watch all night.
