Chapter 19 - Laura's Last Call

The new lead came from an old voicemail saved in Laura's phone backup. It had been sent to Rachel the evening before the crash, but Rachel had never listened to it. She had changed phones after the funeral and assumed the message was lost.
The voicemail was short. Laura sounded tired but clear. She said she'd found irregular supplier invoices and planned to meet Daniel the next day. She also said someone had asked her to cancel a brake inspection, and she wanted to know why. She did not name the person, but she mentioned a company assistant who had called the repair shop.
Rachel played the message for Detective Grant, who preserved it and sent it for authentication. It did not prove that anyone had caused the crash, but it showed Laura had been investigating the same financial irregularities that later surfaced in the trust account.
He didn't turn the memory into certainty. He gave the voicemail and the related documents to the investigators, then waited for their conclusions. The review found enough to reopen questions about the canceled inspection, but not enough to say that the crash had been deliberately caused. The authorities continued looking for corroborating evidence.
Eric entered a cooperation agreement in the financial case and pleaded guilty to fraud. He did not receive immunity for anything connected to Laura's death. That part of the investigation remained open.
Daniel told Jake only that Laura had been trying to uncover dishonest business practices and that the family was learning more. He did not tell him that his mother had been in danger; the evidence did not establish that.
Jake listened, then said, “She was trying to protect people.”
That evening, they took the potted plant from the patio and moved it to the front steps. Jake wanted it where visitors could see it.
