Chapter 20 - The Last Question

On the anniversary of the barbecue, Daniel and Jake returned to the patio with Rachel and a few close friends. There was no big party, no elaborate spread, no attempt to pretend the year had been simple. They grilled chicken, made corn, and set a pitcher of iced tea on the table—store-bought, sealed, and poured by Daniel in front of everyone because Jake had asked for it that way.

For a moment, Jake looked at the glass and went quiet. Daniel noticed, but he didn't rush to fill the silence.

“You want lemonade instead?” he asked.

Jake shook his head. “No. I want to drink tea again. I just need a second.”

Jake picked up the glass and took a small sip. Then he set it down and let out a breath that sounded almost like a laugh. Rachel began telling a story about Daniel's first disastrous attempt at grilling, and the table slowly warmed with familiar voices.

After dinner, Jake and his father walked to the edge of the yard. The security camera remained in place, but its purpose had changed. It was one tool among many, not a substitute for trust or attention. The system was controlled by Daniel alone, and he had told Jake exactly what it recorded and who could access it.

“Do you ever wish you hadn't seen it?” Daniel asked.

Jake thought for a while. “Sometimes. But if I hadn't, you might have drunk it.”

“I was scared you wouldn't believe me.”

“I know.” Daniel's voice caught. “I'm sorry I gave you reasons to think that.”

Jake looked up at him. “You believed me when it mattered.”

Daniel pulled him into a hug. He didn't tell Jake that everything was fixed. Some things were still being investigated, and Laura's accident remained unresolved. Vanessa's sentence did not undo the harm. The company would need years of oversight to rebuild its safeguards.

But the truth had been spoken, the evidence preserved, and the boy who had shouted at the patio door no longer had to stand alone with what he knew.

He had once believed a family stayed safe by keeping its troubles private.

Now he knew better.

A family stayed safe when the truth was allowed through the door.
