Chapter 14 - PHASE TWO

Silver Pines looked peaceful. Inside, investigators found a private suite reserved under Ava's name.

Paid six months in advance.

The admission paperwork claimed Ava had severe cognitive decline, paranoid delusions, and "episodes of aggression toward caregivers."

The physician signature was forged.

The emergency contact was Margaret.

The authorization gave the facility permission to restrict Ava's phone access.

Phase two was not murder.

It was disappearance with paperwork.

"She was going to put me here," Ava said when Ruiz showed her the documents.

Maya nodded. "Once admitted under emergency guardianship, fighting your way out could have taken weeks or months."

Ava imagined Margaret visiting with flowers, telling staff that her daughter-in-law was confused again.

She imagined Ethan being told Ava refused visitors.

She imagined her own protests written into a chart as symptoms.

That frightened her more than the crash.

Then Silver Pines' director admitted Margaret had visited twice.

On the second visit, she brought a consultant.

Raymond Pike.

The director remembered him because he never entered the building.

He waited near the maintenance shed.

Police searched the shed.

Behind a stack of landscaping equipment they found a duffel bag containing cash, burner phones, and a handgun registered to Charles Hale.

Ethan recognized it from childhood.

His father kept it locked in a safe.

Margaret had told the family it disappeared after his death.

Ruiz sealed it as evidence.

That evening, ballistics called.

The gun had never been fired in a recorded crime.

But investigators found something else in the duffel.

A set of vehicle keys.

The tag read: A. HALE — BLACK SUV.

Attached to the ring was a tiny plastic charm Ava recognized.

She had bought it on her honeymoon.

Those keys had vanished the night of the crash.

And only two people had known where she kept the spare.

One was Ethan.

May you like

The other was Margaret.
