Chapter 5 - THE CAR THAT NEVER DISAPPEARED

The warehouse sat forty minutes outside the city behind a chain-link fence and a row of dead industrial lots.

Ethan wanted to go inside immediately.

Detective Ruiz stopped him.

"You touch nothing."

The owner unlocked Unit 18 with a master key.

Under a gray tarp sat Ava's black SUV.

The front end was crushed, the windshield spiderwebbed, one wheel bent inward. Ethan stared at the wreck and felt sick.

His mother had told him the vehicle had been destroyed.

She had lied.

Ruiz called in a forensic mechanic named Daniel Cho.

Daniel crouched beside the ruined front assembly for nearly an hour. Then he slid underneath the vehicle with a flashlight.

When he came out, his expression had changed.

"Brake line's been replaced."

"After the crash?" Ethan asked.

"Looks that way."

Ruiz frowned. "Why would someone replace a brake line on a totaled vehicle?"

Daniel wiped his hands.

"To hide damage to the original line."

They found the first major break twenty minutes later.

Tucked beneath the spare tire was a plastic evidence bag containing a short piece of rubber brake hose.

Someone had saved it.

Someone had also written two words on the bag in black marker.

CUT CLEAN.

Ruiz looked at Ethan.

"Who had access to the car after the crash?"

Ethan thought of the insurance adjuster, the tow company, the police, the repair shop.

Then his phone buzzed.

A text from an unknown number.

STOP DIGGING INTO THE CRASH.

A second message arrived before he could answer.

YOUR WIFE SURVIVED ONCE.

A third followed.
