Chapter 8 - CLAIRE'S SIGNATURE

Claire arrived at the hospital furious and terrified.
"I never signed that."
She stared at the document until her hands began shaking.
Ethan stood by the window. "It looks exactly like your signature."
"Because Mom has had twenty years to practice it."
The room went quiet.
Claire said Margaret had copied her children's signatures for years and called it convenience. No one had questioned it.
"Last Christmas," Claire said, "Mom asked me to sign a blank witness page. She said it was for the foundation audit. I refused."
Maya's eyes narrowed. "Did anyone else sign one?"
Claire looked sick.
"Uncle Richard might have."
Richard Hale was Charles's older brother and chairman of the family's charitable foundation. He adored Margaret and had defended her after every family conflict.
When Ethan called him, Richard exploded.
"Your mother has sacrificed her entire life for you. Now your wife and some housekeeper are feeding police a fantasy?"
"Lena. Her name is Lena."
"I don't care what her name is."
Ava heard enough.
"Ask him about the blank witness page," she said.
Ethan did.
Silence.
Then Richard's voice changed.
"She said it was routine."
"Did you sign it?"
Another silence.
"Yes."
Maya closed her eyes.
Richard had unknowingly supplied a real signature that could be attached to a fraudulent document.
Before Ethan could say more, Claire grabbed his arm.
"There's something you don't know."
She had received a voicemail from Margaret that morning.
She played it on speaker.
Margaret sounded calm.
"Claire, your brother is overwhelmed. Ava is manipulating him because she knows he'll leave once he understands how sick she really is. I need you to remember who your family is."
Then came the line that silenced everyone.
"And don't make me tell Ethan what really happened with Dad."
Claire stopped the recording.
Ethan stared at her.
"What does that mean?"
Claire began to cry.
May you like
"I think Mom knows I saw her the night Dad died."
