Chapter 20 - The Day He Didn’t Have to Be Brave

One year after the staircase, Daniel came home early.

Not because of an emergency.

Because it was Tuesday.

Tuesdays belonged to the kids now.

He opened the door.

Laughter.

No screaming.

No silence.

Emma was six.

Noah was nine.

Daniel smiled.

“Where’s the disaster?”

Noah pointed.

“Emma used my blue marker.”

Emma shouted, “It was on the floor!”

Daniel raised a hand.

Megan groaned.

Emma ran to Daniel.

He picked her up.

She was getting too big.

He did it anyway.

Noah looked at the clock.

“You’re early.”

“No. I’m on time.”

“For once.”

“Rude.”

Noah grinned.

Closed.

No new dates.

Daniel kept it there not as evidence.

As a reminder.

After dinner, Emma spilled milk.

She froze.

Daniel noticed.

A tiny old reflex.

Then Noah noticed too.

He reached for paper towels.

“It’s okay.”

Emma looked at Daniel.

“Am I in trouble?”

“No.”

“Really?”

“It’s milk.”

She smiled.

The moment passed.

Later, Noah came downstairs after bedtime.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Can I ask something?”

“Always.”

“Do you think Aunt Rachel loved us?”

Daniel thought carefully.

“I think she believed she did.”

“That’s weird.”

“Adults are weird.”

Noah sat beside him.

“Then why did she do bad things?”

“Because love doesn’t automatically make someone safe.”

Noah nodded slowly.

“Safe people act safe.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Exactly.”

Noah yawned.

Then leaned against him.

Daniel remembered the boy on the staircase.

Crying.

Terrified.

Standing between a four-year-old and an adult because he believed no one else would.

He could not.

What he could do was make sure Noah never had to play that role again.

The next morning, Emma and Noah argued over cereal.

Normal.

Loud.

Annoying.

Beautiful.

Daniel poured coffee.

Noah shouted, “Dad! Emma took my spoon!”

Emma yelled, “There are other spoons!”

Daniel walked into the kitchen.

No fear.

No secret signals.

No child watching the door.

He looked at both of them.

“Okay. Who wants to explain?”

They both started talking at once.

May you like

Daniel laughed.

And this time, when his son stood between him and his little sister, it was only because Noah wanted the last pancake.
