Chapter 3 - The Things Hidden in Noah’s Closet

Daniel woke Noah gently.

“Buddy.”

Noah blinked.

“What?”

Daniel held up the envelope.

“Have you seen this?”

Noah sat up.

“No.”

Daniel believed the fear before the word.

“When did someone put it here?”

Noah stared at the bracelet.

“That’s Aunt Rachel’s.”

“I know.”

“I know.”

Noah started crying anyway.

Daniel sat beside him.

“I know.”

The next morning, Daniel photographed everything before touching it again.

His attorney, Susan Blake, told him to preserve the envelope.

“Do not confront Rachel alone.”

“She planted stolen property in an eight-year-old’s room.”

“Then treat this like evidence.”

Rachel called at eight.

Daniel answered on speaker while Susan listened.

“Did you check?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“No.”

“What?”

“I understand somebody wanted me to find your bracelet in Noah’s closet.”

Rachel’s voice sharpened.

“He steals.”

“Since when?”

“Months.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Daniel nearly laughed.

Protect.

The word adults use when they do something to a child they know they could not defend honestly.

“How much cash was supposed to be there?” Daniel asked.

Silence.

Then Rachel said, “What?”

“You told me to check his room. How did you know what I would find?”

“I guessed.”

“You guessed your bracelet was in his closet?”

“And the cash?”

Daniel looked at Susan.

She nodded.

Rachel said, “You’re twisting this.”

He hung up.

Then Noah walked into the kitchen.

Daniel crouched.

“What?”

“Yesterday Aunt Rachel went in my room.”

“When?”

“After school.”

“Why?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then Emma appeared holding her stuffed rabbit.

“Aunt Rachel put Daddy papers there.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What papers?”

Emma shrugged.

Nothing.

Then Noah pointed to the cereal shelf.

“Behind that.”

Daniel moved three boxes.

Bank statements.

And a life insurance policy naming his children as beneficiaries.

On the front, in Rachel’s handwriting:

Daniel stopped breathing.
