Chapter 7 - The Edited Video

Evelyn invited Daniel inside.

Her hands shook as she opened her tablet.

Rachel had sent the clip by text.

Six seconds.

Daniel grabbing Noah by the shoulders.

Noah crying.

Daniel saying, “You do not ever do that again.”

Then the clip stopped.

Daniel remembered the moment.

Noah had run into the street after a soccer ball.

Daniel had grabbed him in panic.

“Do you have the full message?”

Evelyn nodded.

Rachel had written:

This is what I live with. I’m trying to protect the kids.

Daniel stared at the words.

Evelyn whispered, “She said you were getting worse after Laura died.”

“She used my wife.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Did you ever hear me hurting them?”

“No.”

“Did you hear screaming?”

“Yes.”

“Whose?”

“Mostly Emma.”

Daniel sat down.

“How often?”

“Afternoons.”

“When I was at work.”

“Yes.”

There it was.

The same fact.

Different interpretation.

Rachel had taken the sound of her own mistreatment and turned it into evidence against Daniel.

This one complete.

Daniel looked up.

“A few weeks ago I saw Rachel put something in your trash can after midnight.”

“What?”

“A black bag.”

“Which night?”

Evelyn remembered because garbage pickup had been delayed by a storm.

Daniel checked the exterior camera archive.

At 12:43 a.m., Rachel crossed the yard carrying a black trash bag.

And smiled.

Daniel replayed it.

Susan said, “Then whatever she threw away may have been something she wanted you to think she was hiding.”

The garbage was long gone.

But the city pickup records gave them the truck number.

Susan contacted an investigator.

Then the sanitation supervisor said something unexpected.

That load had been diverted after a mechanical failure.

The bag might still exist.

Two days later, police recovered a black bag matching the footage.

Inside were children’s clothing.

A broken picture frame.

And a prescription bottle with Daniel’s name on it.

May you like

The bottle was empty.

Except Daniel had never thrown it away.
