Chapter 11

Dr. Mercer had cleared his office before sunrise.
Computer gone.
Files gone.
Phone off.
But he had made one mistake.
He left his office printer.
Forensics recovered the print queue.
Among insurance forms and therapy notes was a document titled TEMPORARY EMERGENCY PLACEMENT RECOMMENDATION.
It was dated two days before the hallway attack.
Grace read the first paragraph.
"'Due to escalating conflict between biological parents, the child should be placed temporarily in a neutral residential environment.'"
Daniel looked at Ruiz.
"Residential?"
"A private child assessment center."
Grace's face changed.
"Which one?"
Ruiz read the name.
"Brighton House."
Grace stood so fast her chair scraped.
"No."
Daniel had never heard that tone from her.
"What?"
"My cousin's daughter was sent there during a custody fight. Parents could not see her for three weeks."
Daniel looked at the document again.
The recommendation had spaces for two signatures.
Mercer's.
And Daniel's.
A scanned version of Daniel's signature had already been inserted.
He had never seen the paper.
Vanessa had been preparing to send Lily away.
The words from the recorder came back.
Dead girls keep secrets, sweetheart.
Maybe "dead" had not only meant dead.
Maybe Vanessa needed Lily absent.
Silent.
Unreachable.
Ruiz's team traced Mercer's toll records.
One call repeated across the last month.
Kyle Sterling.
Vanessa's brother.
The man at the pool.
Police found Kyle at a motel outside Austin.
He surrendered after two hours.
His first statement was simple.
"I never touched the kid."
Ruiz asked the question anyway.
"What happened at the pool?"
Kyle stared at the table.
"Vanessa told me to turn off the cameras."
"Why?"
"She said Lily was going to have a meltdown and she did not want it recorded."
"Did she push her?"
Kyle looked away.
"I heard a splash."
"Did you help?"
"No."
"Did you call anyone?"
"No."
Grace's hands curled into fists.
Daniel asked through the observation glass, "Why would he admit this now?"
Ruiz answered, "Because he wants a deal."
Kyle kept talking.
Vanessa had debts.
Mercer had debts.
And both expected money when Daniel moved Lily's trust.
Then Kyle said something that made Ruiz stop taking notes.
"The bat thing wasn't supposed to happen."
Daniel leaned closer to the glass.
Ruiz asked, "What was supposed to happen?"
Kyle swallowed.
"Grace was supposed to be arrested before she reached Lily."
"And Lily?"
Kyle whispered, "She was supposed to be gone by morning."
Daniel felt the floor disappear under him.
"Gone where?"
Kyle looked directly at the one-way mirror.
May you like
"Brighton House."
Then he added, "Unless Vanessa changed the plan."
