Chapter 16

The video lasted forty-three seconds.
Lily stood near the upstairs bathroom in pajamas.
Vanessa blocked the hallway.
"Where is the black recorder?"
Lily shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Do not lie to me."
"I don't."
Vanessa lifted the bat, not swinging, just showing it.
"Your mother taught you to keep secrets."
Lily backed away.
"I want Daddy."
"Your father chose me."
Lily began to cry.
Then Vanessa said the line that had followed Lily down the hallway.
"Dead girls keep secrets, sweetheart."
The video ended as Lily ran.
Grace covered her mouth.
Daniel could not move.
Ruiz watched it twice.
"The phone appears to have been propped up. She may have been recording Lily for another edited clip."
Daniel stared at the frozen frame.
Vanessa had created evidence so often that she had finally created evidence against herself.
The prosecutor amended the case.
The threat, the bat, the setup, the prior pool event, and the plan to remove Lily from the home now formed one pattern.
Vanessa's attorney stopped calling it a misunderstanding.
He started discussing mental health mitigation.
Grace hated that.
"So now she's sick, not responsible?"
Her lawyer answered carefully.
"Both can be true. A diagnosis does not erase choices."
Daniel sat through every hearing.
He did not hide behind attorneys.
At the custody review, the judge asked him directly why he had accepted Mercer's reports over Grace's repeated objections.
Daniel swallowed.
"Because the reports told me what I wanted to hear."
Grace looked at him.
The judge waited.
Daniel continued.
"They told me I was the stable parent. That my home was safer. That my judgment was sound. I liked that version of myself, so I stopped checking whether it was true."
The courtroom was silent.
"I failed my daughter by confusing confidence with proof."
Grace looked down.
The judge restored her parenting time immediately and suspended every order based on Mercer's evaluation pending investigation.
Then the judge asked Lily's advocate one question.
"Does the child feel safe with her father?"
The advocate hesitated.
Daniel's chest tightened.
"She feels safer," the woman said.
Not safe.
Safer.
Daniel understood the difference.
Outside court, Grace said, "You heard it."
"Yeah."
"You cannot rush her."
"I won't."
Then Ruiz called.
Dr. Mercer had been located.
May you like
He was at an airport in Dallas.
And he had something in his luggage that changed the case again.
