Chapter 11 - CLAIRE

Nathan hadn’t spoken to Claire in eight months.
She lived in Boston, served on the Cole Meridian board, and had publicly opposed his marriage to Victoria without ever explaining why.
Nathan called her.
She answered on the first ring.
“I was wondering when you’d find that.”
“You changed Grace’s biometric access.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To stop Victoria.”
Nathan closed his eyes. “Start making sense.”
Claire’s voice tightened. “Dad called me three weeks before he died. He told me there was a child. He made me promise that if the Danes ever moved against her, I would freeze the archive.”
“You could have told me.”
“He made me swear.”
“He’s dead, Claire.”
“I know. And I hated him for making me carry it.”
Grace took the phone.
“How do we reopen it?”
Claire went silent for a beat.
“In person. Two family witnesses. One biological parent. One independent trustee.”
Nathan frowned. “Then fly here.”
“I already am.”
Her plane landed that afternoon.
When Claire walked into Nathan’s house and saw Lily, she stopped cold.
“Oh my God.”
Lily hid behind Grace.
Claire crouched slowly. “Hi. I’m Claire.”
Lily studied her. “You look like Daddy.”
Claire laughed and cried at the same time.
“Yeah. Unfortunately.”
For ten minutes, the house felt almost normal.
Then Claire pulled Nathan aside.
“There’s something Dad didn’t put in the letter.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened. “Of course there is.”
“The archive isn’t just about Grace.”
“What else?”
“Dane Capital has been bleeding Cole Meridian for years through shell vendors. Dad found out too late.”
“How much?”
“Nearly eighty million.”
Claire continued. “And Victoria didn’t just know.”
She handed him a printed email.
Victoria had personally approved one of the shell companies.
Three years before she ever met Nathan.
Their entire relationship had been planned.

At the bottom of the email was one sentence from Malcolm Dane:
Once the marriage is complete, the boy owns nothing he can’t be made to sign away.
