Chapter 9 - THE DEAD MAN’S APOLOGY

Vale survived surgery, barely.

Nathan went straight from the hospital to First Arizona Trust with Rebecca.

The bank manager recognized the phrase immediately.

“The dead man’s apology,” she said, then disappeared into the vault.

She returned with a sealed gray envelope.

Inside was a second key card and a handwritten note from Charles Cole.

Nathan knew the handwriting before he read a word.

If you are opening this, then I failed to contain what I helped create.

Nathan stopped.

Rebecca said nothing.

He continued.

Charles admitted forcing Grace out of Phoenix. He admitted ordering surveillance. He admitted allowing Malcolm Dane to fabricate financial records against her.

Then came the line Nathan was not prepared for.

I confirmed the child was yours before she was born.

Nathan sat down hard.

Grace had told the truth about everything.

Charles wrote that he later discovered Malcolm had no intention of honoring their agreement. Dane planned to use Victoria’s marriage to Nathan to absorb Cole Meridian completely.

So Charles created insurance.

A sealed evidence archive.

Audio recordings. Bank transfers. Emails. Original DNA results.

And one document that could destroy the merger permanently.

Nathan looked at Rebecca. “Where?”

She read the final paragraph.

The archive could only be released by “the biological mother of the protected descendant.”

Grace.

Charles had made her the final key.

Nathan laughed without humor. “He terrorized her, then made her responsible for cleaning up his mess.”

Rebecca folded the letter. “That sounds like Charles.”

When Nathan returned home, Grace was sitting on the floor building a block tower with Lily.

He knelt in front of her.

“My father knew.”

Grace’s eyes filled immediately.

“He knew Lily was mine.”

Nathan handed her the letter.

She read in silence.

Then she reached the bottom and frowned.

“What archive?”

Nathan opened his mouth.

The lights went out.

The alarm died with them.

Owen shouted from the hallway.

“Generator was cut!”

Glass shattered downstairs.

Grace grabbed Lily.

Nathan heard footsteps racing up the back staircase.

Someone had come for the only person who could open Charles Cole’s evidence vault.
