Chapter 2 - THE SIGNATURE

Nathan snatched the folder before Victoria could reach it.

“I never signed this.”

Victoria pressed one hand to her chest. “You signed dozens of estate documents last week. You never read anything I put in front of you.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Grace pushed herself against the cabinet, protecting Lily behind her legs.

Nathan flipped through the pages. The petition claimed Grace was unstable, unemployed, transient, and preparing to flee Arizona with Lily. It asked a judge to grant temporary custody to Nathan immediately.

A second filing tried to place Lily’s inherited interests under Cole Family Holdings.

Grace whispered, “That’s why she came after us.”

Nathan turned. “What does Lily inherit?”

“Your grandfather’s trust.”

Grace swallowed. “Your father knew Lily existed before she was born.”

Victoria snapped, “Stop lying.”

Grace ignored her. “He told me if I ever proved paternity, Lily would trigger a bloodline clause. A third of the voting shares would move into a protected trust for her.”

Nathan looked at Victoria.

Her wedding was in two weeks.

Their prenup had been written around his controlling interest.

If Lily existed legally, the entire ownership map changed.

Nathan felt sick.

“You knew.”

Victoria’s eyes hardened. “I knew there was a rumor.”

“A rumor doesn’t file custody papers.”

She took one step toward him. “Nathan, think. Grace walked into your house three months ago under a fake last name. She got close to you. She brought a child here. This is manipulation.”

Grace flinched.

Nathan looked at her. “Is Hart your real name?”

“No.”

The answer hit him harder than he expected.

“What is it?”

“Grace Bennett.”

Nathan’s breath stopped.

He knew that name.

Five years ago, Grace Bennett had vanished the week before he planned to propose to her.

His father had told him she stole money and ran away.

Then Nathan remembered the last voicemail she ever left.

Not goodbye.

Just three words.

“I’m so sorry.”

And someone breathing behind her.
