Chapter 18 - LILLIAN COLE

There was no Lillian Cole in Nathan’s family.

At least, none he knew.

Forensic accountants traced the trust to an offshore bank created eighteen years earlier.

The beneficiary record was sealed by court order.

Rebecca dug through Charles’s archive until sunrise.

Then she found it.

A birth certificate.

Lillian Marie Cole.

Mother: Evelyn Bennett.

Father: Charles Cole.

Grace stared at the document.

“My mother?”

Evelyn sat down as if her knees had disappeared.

“I was nineteen.”

Nathan felt the room spin.

Charles had fathered a daughter with Evelyn decades earlier.

A baby who died after three days.

Or so Evelyn had been told.

“She didn’t die?” Grace whispered.

Evelyn began to cry. “Charles said she did.”

Rebecca looked at the offshore records. “Someone has been using the dead child’s identity for years.”

Nathan understood with horror.

Rebecca opened the amendment.

Current beneficiary: Lily Marie Bennett.

Nathan stared at the screen.

His father had hidden millions behind the identity of a dead infant, then redirected it to the granddaughter he had once tried to erase.

“How much?” Nathan asked.

Rebecca swallowed.

“Sixty-two million dollars.”

Grace shook her head. “I don’t want it.”

“It isn’t yours,” Nathan said softly. “It’s Lily’s.”

“And that’s exactly why people keep trying to turn her into an account number.”

Nathan looked at his daughter sleeping on the couch.

“You’re right.”

He made a decision.

The next morning, he called an emergency shareholder meeting.

He would dissolve the old trust structure publicly.

He would give up personal control of the company.

And he would expose every crime Charles Cole had committed.

Claire stared at him. “You know what that does to the family name.”

Nathan nodded.

“That name already did enough.”

Then Rebecca entered carrying one final sealed envelope from Charles’s safe.

She placed it in Nathan’s hand.

“He wrote four words on the front.”

Nathan looked down.

TELL HER I WAS WRONG.
