Chapter 18 - THE PERSON WHO LOOKED AWAY

It was Leonard Price.

Not because he'd stolen money, according to the records, but because he'd approved a shortened victim list after being told that Thomas's estate had no living claimant. The claim was false. He'd failed to verify it, and the omission had followed the case for more than a decade.

Arthur met Leonard in a conference room with his new lawyer present. The older man looked exhausted.

“I told myself the estate could be handled later,” Leonard said. “Then every year I found a reason not to reopen it.”

“You knew it might be wrong.”

“Yes.”

“Then you had a choice.”

“I did.” Leonard placed a signed statement on the table, along with copies of every retained file. He had already notified his professional liability carrier and the appropriate oversight authorities. “I don't expect you to forgive me.”

Arthur took the documents without shaking his hand.

Six months after the night in the foyer, the investigation had produced charges against Roland and allegations against others involved in falsifying documents. Diana entered a plea in the assault case and agreed to cooperate in the related financial investigation. Legal proceedings were still unfolding; nobody could promise that every dollar would be recovered.

Arthur spoke at a meeting of claimants in a community center, not a hotel ballroom. Some people shouted. Some cried. Maria Navarro stood at the back beside Daniel, listening without applause.

“We're setting aside family funds for verified unpaid claims,” Arthur said. “The outside trustee will publish the process. You don't owe my family gratitude for correcting even part of what we broke.”

Evelyn, sitting in the first row, nodded slowly.

After the meeting, Lauren Keene approached carrying an envelope. “My father wrote this when your father went to prison,” she said. “I never mailed it.”

Arthur opened it in the parking lot.

The first line read: I don't want your money nearly as much as I want your son to hear the truth.
