Chapter 3 - THE MAN WHO DIDN'T DIE

“Roland Pike,” Evelyn said when Arthur showed her the image.
Her heart monitor picked up. Arthur lowered the phone.
“You knew him?”
“He was your father's business partner.” Evelyn looked at the rain moving down the hospital window. “Your father trusted him. That was the first mistake.”
Arthur had been sixteen when Victor Sterling died in a car accident. Adults told him only that Victor had been a complicated man who'd made terrible financial decisions. Later Arthur learned Victor had pleaded guilty to fraud. He stopped asking questions after Evelyn began spending her retirement trying to satisfy claims from families Victor had ruined.
“Pike died overseas in 2006,” Arthur said.
“That's what the newspapers said.” Evelyn's voice was barely audible. “It's what he wanted everybody to believe.”
She asked for a glass of water, then refused to say more until her attorney arrived. Arthur hated it. He also understood that his grandmother's hands were still trembling.
The next morning Leonard Price, the family's gray-haired lawyer, brought a folder of courthouse filings. The criminal case had named Victor as the organizer of a false investment scheme that sold retirees shares in apartment projects that were never built. Forty-three families had lost nearly six million dollars. Victor went to prison briefly before cooperating; Pike vanished before trial.
“Your grandmother used the sale of three family properties to make restitution,” Price said. “Not all the settlements have been resolved.”
“Diana said there was a fortune.”
“Diana saw amounts in a ledger. She mistook money owed to people for money owned by the Sterlings.”
Arthur wanted to feel relief. He didn't. Someone had entered the study, and his grandmother had just admitted a supposedly dead man was alive.
“Does Diana know Pike?”
Price hesitated. “She's related to him. Her mother's maiden name was Pike.”
Arthur remembered how Diana had introduced herself at a charity auction eight months earlier, as if the meeting were chance. She'd laughed at his terrible joke and asked about Evelyn with unusual interest.
His phone chimed with a notification from the alarm company: STUDY DOOR—REMOTE ACCESS REQUEST APPROVED, 2:14 A.M.
The authorization name on the screen was ARTHUR STERLING.
