Chapter 7 - SMOKE BEHIND THE DOOR

By the time Arthur reached the mansion, firefighters had put out a small blaze in a planter beside the study window. Someone had used lighter fluid and left a threatening note under a stone. No one was hurt, and the flames never reached the house, but Malcolm's face was gray.

“They wanted us to panic,” Malcolm said.

Arthur watched an officer bag the note: BURN THE LEDGER OR WE BURN THE HOUSE.

Evelyn returned from the hospital that evening with a cast on her wrist. She insisted on walking into the study herself. Arthur stayed close enough to catch her if she stumbled, but he didn't take over.

“Tell me the whole truth,” he said. “Not the version you think I can handle.”

Evelyn sat beneath Victor's portrait. “Your father stole from people who believed he was building homes. Roland invented fake contracts. Victor signed them. When Victor agreed to testify, Roland vanished. I sold properties to repay the victims. I thought the remaining money was held by the court-appointed escrow administrator.”

“But eleven families were marked paid.”

“I found out three weeks ago. Daniel found the first false receipt. I asked Leonard to audit the rest.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wanted one good thing in your life to stay untouched by Victor.”

Arthur felt the old anger rising, then saw the cast on her hand. “Keeping secrets didn't protect me. It brought Diana through our front door.”

Evelyn nodded. “You're right.”

She opened a compartment beneath the desk blotter and handed him a photograph. Victor stood beside a younger Roland Pike and a woman Arthur didn't recognize. On the back, in his father's writing, were the words First meeting. C. Cross. Do not trust the introductions.

“Cross?” Arthur said. “That's Diana's last name.”

Evelyn's eyes filled. “That woman is Diana's mother.”
