Chapter 16 - Grace's Trust

Grace had built protections into Ella's trust because she had grown up watching money tear families apart.

I used to tease her about the endless clauses.

Now those clauses were saving our daughter.

The petition claimed I had mismanaged trust assets and mixed them with company funds.

Attached were bank statements.

They looked real.

Aaron examined them for twenty minutes and swore.

"These aren't altered statements," he said. "They're real statements from a real account."

"Then why don't I know the account?"

He pointed to the ownership line.

BROOKS FAMILY EDUCATION RESERVE.

Authorized signer: Ethan Brooks.

I had never opened it.

Laura called the bank's fraud department.

The account had been created online using scanned identification, my signature samples, and a video verification clip.

"Video?" I asked.

The bank sent it under subpoena later that afternoon.

The clip showed me looking into a camera and saying, "I authorize the account."

Except it was not me.

It was footage from a company investor video, cut and rearranged.

Someone had built a fake identity process around public clips and stolen documents.

More than seven hundred thousand dollars had passed through the account.

Most went to Silver Pine.

Then Aaron found the source of the money.

Small transfers from Ella's trust reimbursements.

Education expenses.

Medical expenses.

Travel expenses.

Hundreds of tiny thefts designed to look boring.

"Vanessa was not just trying to get future control," Laura said. "She was covering what had already been stolen."

I thought of the dog bowl again.

Not because it connected to money.

Because it showed the kind of person who could look at a child and decide humiliation was useful.

Then Aaron opened one final transaction.

The earliest theft had occurred eighteen months ago.

Three weeks before Vanessa and I got married.
