Chapter 19 - What Ella Needed to Hear

I did not let Ella read Vanessa's letter.

Not then.

Maybe never.

Children deserve truth. They do not deserve every weapon adults manufacture out of it.

Vanessa, Lucas, and Derek were charged in connection with fraud, forgery, evidence tampering, and the financial scheme. The child-related investigation continued separately. Caleb Ross withdrew from representing Vanessa after prosecutors began asking about his role in Silver Pine.

None of that made breakfast easier.

Three weeks later, Ella sat at our kitchen island staring at pancakes.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah?"

"Do I have to be extra good now?"

I set down my coffee.

"No."

"What if I spill something?"

"Then we wipe it up."

"What if I yell?"

"Then we figure out why you're yelling."

"What if I make you mad?"

That one hurt.

I moved to the stool beside her.

"You are allowed to make me mad. You are allowed to be messy. You are allowed to have bad days. None of that makes you disposable."

Her eyes filled.

"Vanessa said people only keep you if you're useful."

I took her hand.

"Vanessa was wrong."

Maria turned away at the sink, wiping her face.

We started family counseling. I cut my travel by more than half. Aaron helped restructure the company so no executive could approve sensitive transfers alone. Laura rebuilt every part of Ella's trust security.

I thought the worst was behind us.

Then, one Friday afternoon, Laura called.

"Ethan, Vanessa wants to plead."

"To what?"

"Most of it. But she is asking for one condition."

I felt my jaw tighten.

"What condition?"

May you like

Laura hesitated.

"She wants to speak to you in person before sentencing."
