Chapter 14 - THE BOARDROOM

Lucas almost skipped the board meeting.

Hannah told him not to.

“If you stay home because she frightened us, she still controls the room.”

So Lucas went.

He walked into the Mercer Foundation boardroom with Priya on one side and Martin Dale on the other.

Evelyn attended by video from her attorney’s office after being released on bond under a strict no-contact order.

She looked composed.

“Lucas,” she said, “this public spectacle is unnecessary.”

He sat down.

“You made it public when you sent edited audio to my employer.”

One board member cleared his throat.

“Let’s stay on the agenda.”

Evelyn’s allies argued that Lucas’s family crisis made him unfit to lead the foundation.

Then Priya distributed the forged trust documents.

Martin distributed the emails.

Lucas played the recording of Evelyn and Warren discussing how to edit Hannah’s words.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then an elderly board member named Margaret Chen removed her glasses.

“Evelyn,” she said quietly, “did you manufacture evidence against your daughter-in-law?”

Evelyn leaned toward the camera.

“I protected a child.”

“That was not my question.”

“I did what weak people were too afraid to do.”

Lucas felt something inside him go still.

All his life, Evelyn had made certainty look like virtue. Now he saw entitlement without restraint.

The vote to remove Lucas failed.

Then Margaret made a new motion.

Suspend Evelyn from all foundation authority pending investigation.

The motion passed six to one.

Evelyn’s screen went dark before the meeting ended.

Outside, Lucas expected relief.

Instead, he found Hannah waiting by his car with Sophie.

Her face was pale.

“What happened?”

She held up her phone.

A blocked number had sent one message.

You think Evelyn did this alone?

Attached was a photograph taken that morning.

May you like

It showed Hannah standing at their kitchen window.

Holding Sophie.
