Chapter 18 - THE ANSWER

“No,” Lucas said.
Hannah searched his face.
He continued.
“Not because I hate her. Not because I want revenge. Because Sophie is not an experiment in whether Mom can control herself next time.”
Hannah’s shoulders loosened.
“And me?”
Lucas swallowed.
“You never have to be alone with her again. Ever.”
Hannah cried without looking ashamed.
Lucas held her.
He had spent most of his life confusing loyalty with obedience. Now he saw the cost.
At the criminal pretrial hearing, Evelyn entered in jail clothing beneath a dark cardigan her attorney had brought.
She looked older.
Smaller.
When she saw Lucas, her face collapsed.
“My boy.”
Lucas did not answer.
Her attorney approached Priya with a proposed plea agreement covering assault, forgery, violation of the protective order, and conspiracy-related conduct. Other allegations would remain subject to sentencing findings.
Evelyn wanted one condition.
A private meeting with Lucas.
Lucas refused.
She asked again.
He refused again.
Then she wrote him a letter.
Priya asked if he wanted it.
Lucas looked at Hannah.
Hannah said, “That’s your choice.”
He read it alone.
For once, Evelyn did not deny what happened.
She blamed grief.
Fear.
His father’s death.
Losing control of the family.
Then came the line that proved she still did not understand.
I only did terrible things because I loved you too much.
Lucas folded the letter.
At sentencing, the judge asked Hannah if she wished to speak.
Hannah stood.
Her hands trembled.
Her voice did not.
“You did not love my baby too much,” she said. “You loved control too much.”
Evelyn began to cry.

Hannah looked straight at her.
“And you almost taught my husband to call that love.”
